The Daytona Cubs began the second annual High School Field of Dreams Series this month at the historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Eight teams will participate in seven games throughout February and March. Five teams have already taken the field at “The Jack.”
Game 1: Atlantic vs. Mainland
The High School Field of Dream Series kicked off with a great start as the Atlantic Sharks defeated the Mainland Buccaneers in an extra inning thriller, 13-8. Atlantic went into the bottom of the 7th with a 6-5 lead but Mainland fought back to score the tying run on a Marcus Thibodeau single. Atlantic took little time to strike in the 8th, and scored two more runs in the top of the inning to take an 8-6 lead. Mainland showed no panic in the bottom of the inning. Led by Patrick Mitchell, the Buccaneers scored two runs to once again tie the game. Atlantic proved to be too much as they poured on five runs in the top half of the 9th. That proved to be plenty as Mainland could not come back for the third time.
The Bucs Patrick Mitchell did everything he could to get his Buccaneers a win as he went 5-for-5 with two extra base hits, one RBI and scored four times. Atlantic’s Alex Andrews struggled to close the door twice for the Sharks, but picked up his first victory of the year while Marcus Thibodeau suffered the loss.
Game 2: Deltona vs. Seabreeze
In a one-sided affair the Seabreeze Sandcrabs easily handled the Deltona Wolves, 9-4. Seabreeze wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as they knocked in two runs in the first inning and tacked on one more in the second. While neither team could score in the third, Seabreeze blew the door wide open when they put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
University of Miami commitment Joe Lovechio looked strong for the Sandcrabs. Lovechio allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings while striking out eight Wolves as he picked up the victory. Montana Durapau struggled for the Wolves as he gave up 5 runs through three innings. Senior catcher Josh Camilletti helped lead the Sandcrabs offense with three hits including a triple and a run scored.
Game 3: Father Lopez vs. Mainland
In the third game of the High School Field of Dreams series the Mainland Buccaneers defeated the Father Lopez Green Waves 8-5. It seemed as if this game was going to be a showcase of the two schools’ offenses as Mainland had a 3-2 lead after the first. Buccaneers pitcher Travis Hutchins settled down after the first and went the distance for Mainland with eight strike outs. The night was not as favorable to Green Waves starter Danny Kaplan, as he struggled to find his command and allowed 7 runs on the evening.
Father Lopez trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth, but Mainland broke it open by scoring three runs in the inning. With one out in the inning and two men on base Buccaneers shortstop Jordan Johnson hit a two run triple to put his team up 6-2. Travis Hutchins brought in Johnson with a line drive single to left. The Green Waves made a valiant effort to come back by scoring three runs in the last three innings but Hutchins proved to be too strong. Mainland picked up their first win on the year moving to 1-2 while Father Lopez dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
The high school baseball action continues with four more games in March as Seabreeze takes on Mainland on March 5th, Father Lopez squares off against Melbourne on March 10th, Seabreeze faces off with Hagerty on March 13th and Seabreeze will wrap things up with New Smyrna on March 20th.
