Key Error Eats Up Cubs

Road Woes Continue for Daytona in Palm Beach

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Cubs offense continued to scuffle and a big error by Daytona second baseman Jonathan Mota lead to three unearned runs, which broke open a tie game and proved to be the difference in a 4-1 Cardinals win.

The Cubs offense succeeded in not stranding the first base runner of the game. Jim Adduci singled and stole second. With two outs Marquez Smith singled to drive Adduci home and the Cubs snuck ahead, 1-0 early.

Two Palm Beach singles to lead off the fifth inning spelled trouble for Daytona. Brian Cartie came around to score for the Cardinals on a one out RBI ground out by lead off man Tyler Henley. That tied the game at 1-1.

The Cardinals offense struck again in the sixth. The Cubs inserted reliever Todd Blackford, who allowed a single and a walk to begin the frame. Luke Gorsett hit one that was booted by Mota resulting in two runs and a three base error. Vazquez added an RBI single and the Cardinals went up 4-1.

Shaun Garceau got the start for Palm Beach and, like Mark Diapoules in game one, the Cubs had all kinds of trouble scoring runs. After the Cubs scratched across their first inning run, Garceau set down 14 of his next 15 batters faced. Garceau worked around a pair of one out singles in the sixth and got Smith to ground into a double play, netting Garceau a quality start.
