Jupiter jumped out to an early lead versus Daytona starter James Russell. Russell played well as a starter for the Cubs in April before being called up to Tennessee. Russell got touched up for three hits in the first inning, including an RBI double by Kevin Randel. The Hammerheads continued the barrage in the second. After allowing a pair of walks, Russell gave up a three run homer to Daron Roberts. Jupiter led early, 5-0.
It was one of those nights where even Daytona positives turned into negatives. The Cubs scratched out their first run in the fourth inning. Russ Canzler doubled home Ty Wright, but was then thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Robinson Chirinos came up next, with the bases clear and hit a triple. Chirinos was left stranded right there and Daytona got just the one run.
The Hammerheads continued to torment Cubs pitching with Daytona dipping into the bullpen. Both Dustin Sasser and Mike Cooper, despite pitching well overall, were touched up for one run. Jordan Latham came on for the eighth inning and did set down all three of his batters faced.
Robinson Chirinos reached base in four of his five plate appearances. He singled and tripled early, but was hit by a pitch in the hand twice late in the game. After the second plunk, Chirinos went to first to load the bases in the eighth inning for the Cubs. Yusuf Carter came on to pinch hit and got a bases loaded infield single. Again the positive into negative transformation occurred. The Cubs plated a run, but Tony Thomas struck out to retire the side and leave the bases loaded.
