Daytona Downs Jupiter

The Cubs explode For Overpowering Win

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] In a series where the results will affect playoff implications Daytona knew it was time to respond big after dropping game one at home. The Cubs responded in a huge way, as they slugged out an 8-2 victory.

The Cubs offense checked in early on. Darwin Barney drove home two on a bases loaded single in the second inning. Blake Lalli started things with a lead off single. Russ Canzler singled to follow that. After Steve Clevenger sacrificed himself to put Lalli and Canzler in scoring position, Ryan Harvey was intentionally walked. That set the table for Barney, who delivered. It was 2-0 Cubs after two innings.

Russ Canzler started the insurance runs with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. But the sixth is when the Cubs began piling it on. Lalli singled. Clevenger doubled. Once again, Jupiter chose to intentionally walk Harvey. With the bases loaded, Jonathan Mota drilled a two run double. With first base open again, Barney was intentionally walked.

The Barney intentional pass marked the end of the night for Hammerheads starter Derell McCall. Blake Jones came on and walked Tony Thomas and Jim Adduci, both with the bases loaded and therefore bringing in two more runs. Cubs scored four, and went up 7-0.

Jeremy Papelbon continued his outstanding work. His scoreless innings streak continued, as he put up six scoreless in this one, collecting his second straight win. Papelbon allowed just two hits. He did not walk any batters and struck out two. Papelbon continues to go deeper and deeper into ballgames. He went four in his first start, five in second and then the six tonight.
