Cubs Split Double Dip

Need One Win to Clinch a Playoff Berth

[JUPITER, FL] Daytona entered the night needing a doubleheader sweep to clinch the division. Game one was positive for the Cubs. Ty Wright got the offense going early and the Cubs won 4-0. In game two, Jupiter exploded for four runs in the third leading them to victory, 4-2.

In game one, Daytona broke through offensively in the top of the third inning. Jupiter opened the door with some sloppy defense allowing Jonathan Mota to reach first base to lead off the inning. With two outs and two on, Ty Wright came up clutch and drove home two runs on a double. Blake Lalli followed that up with an RBI single to put the Cubs ahead, 3-0.

James Russell put in his finest outing since being returning from Tennessee. Russell pitched six shutout innings and helped Daytona mightily by pitching beyond the five inning mark. Russell allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out three batters.

The Cubs cashed in an insurance run in the sixth. Steve Clevenger singled to begin the inning and advanced to third on a single by Ryan Harvey. Mota struck out, but the ball got away from Hammerhead catcher Chris Hatcher and Clevenger came in to score. The Cubs took game one, 4-0.

Game two saw Chicago’s top 2008 draft pick Andrew Cashner make his Daytona debut. Cashner looked impressive in the first two innings, but ran into big time trouble in the third. Cashner walked Greg Burns and Bryan Petersen to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Logan Morrison dribbled a little swinging bunt in front of Cubs catcher Blake Lalli. Lalli attempted to field and tag out Burns at the plate, but Lalli never got a glove on it and Burns came in to score Jupiter’s first run.

After the first run came across the flood gates opened up for Cashner. Petersen reached third base on the Morrison RBI single and came home to score on balk by Cashner. Vasili Spanos doubled home Morrison two batters later. After a walk to Kevin Randel, Daron Roberts singled a home another run. Jupiter surged ahead, 4-0.

Cashner left after 2.2 innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out one Hammerhead batter.
