[JUPITER, FL] The Cubs entered Saturday with a chance to clinch the Florida State League East. Despite going up 9-1, the Cubs had to wait until Sunday because the game was suspended. But Daytona held steady Sunday and went on to win 9-1. They host game one of the FSL East playoffs at Jackie Robinson Ballpark at 7:05pm Tuesday.

The Cubs offense wasted no time in getting started in the first inning. Jim Adduci singled with one out and he came around to score on an RBI groundout for Blake Lalli, putting Daytona ahead, 1-0.

In the second inning, Daytona continued the offensive productivity. It all started with a Russ Canzler double. Darwin Barney and Tony Thomas walked. Adduci ripped his second single, scoring two runs. The Cubs padded the lead, 3-0.

More runs came in for the Cubs in third inning, as Jupiter starter Jeff Allison wasn’t fooling anybody in the Daytona lineup and got pulled before recording an out. Steve Clevenger checked in with an RBI single to score the inning’s first run. Derrel McCall came on to relieve Allison. McCall got one out, but, with the bases loaded Darwin Barney drilled a double down the left field line, clearing the bases. Tony Thomas doubled home Barney and the Cubs were up, 8-0.

Jupiter’s offense started a little later. The Hammerheads scored on an RBI double by John Purdom in the fourth inning. Jupiter was on the board, but Daytona still lead, 9-1.

With two on and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth for Jupiter play was suspended due to rain. When play picked up Sunday, the Cubs turned to Todd Blackford to take over out of the bullpen. Blackford got Daytona out of the fifth with no damage allowed. The Cubs cruised to victory, 9-2 and clinched the FSL East.

In game two, Jupiter’s offense got things started with an RBI single for Smelin Perez in the bottom of the first to put the Hammerheads up 1-0. After allowing the game’s first run, Daytona starter Hung-Wen Chen found his groove, setting down the next ten batters.

In the top of the fifth Daytona struck back with an RBI single by Adduci. Errors on both Jupiter’s pitcher and third baseman resulted in Adduci scoring all the way from first on a pickoff play gone terribly wrong. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead.

Daytona closer Brian Schlitter ran into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh. The trouble began with a double by Spike McDougall. McDougall came home to score on an RBI single by Jacob Blackwood. Chris Hatcher followed with an RBI base hit by Chris Hatcher and the Hammerheads walked off to a 3-2 victory.
