Big Leaguer Guzman Starts

Canzler Tees Off, Offense Steamrolls Devil Rays

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Former Chicago Cub Angel Guzman made a rehab start for Daytona tonight. This was his first appearance with Daytona since 2004 and the first time in over a year that he pitched in a game. Guzman looked sharp, allowing just one earned run in two innings pitched, contributing to an 13-5 Cubs win. Russ Canzler was responsible for over half the runs, as he slammed two homeruns and tallied seven RBIs.

The Devil Rays took a first inning lead courtesy of two errors and several seeing eye singles. Pedro Powell singled and stole both second and third base. Ryan Royster picked up the game’s first RBI, hitting a ball to Darwin Barney, who booted it for an error. Matt Fields singled next. Then Cesar Suarez singled home Royster. The ball was overrun by Cubs right fielder Yusuf Carter, allowing Fields to reach third and Suarez to advance to second base. Hector Gimenez stood in next and flew out to right field. Fields scored on the fly out, but Suarez was thrown out trying to tag up and advance to third base, resulting in an inning ending double play. Fields did cross home plate before the tag was applied to Suarez, making it 3-0 Vero Beach.

Guzman pitched much better in the second inning, striking out catcher Christian Lopez and then getting two ground outs. In the bottom half of the second, Russ Canzler single-handedly took Guzman off the hook. Steve Clevenger and Marquez Smith drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning. After Carter flew out, Canzler stepped in and unloaded his eighth homerun of the season, collecting three RBIs. With two innings in the books and Guzman finished for the night, it was tied at 3-3.

Looking for their first lead of the ballgame, the Cubs took advantage of a mistake in the sixth inning, as Carter reached on an error by Fields at first base. Canzler singled, sending Carter to third and setting the table for Jonathan Mota. Mota laid down a squeeze bunt, which scored Carter. Hustling on the play, Mota reached first and the Cubs nabbed their first lead of the day, 5-4.

Daytona wanted some insurance runs to put away Vero Beach. In the seventh inning, Russ Canzler delivered once again. With one out Smith and Carter walked. Canzler crushed his second three run homer of the night, pushing the Cubs lead up to 8-4. Mota doubled and Barney singled home Mota, extending to a 9-4 Daytona advantage.

Every time Vero Beach walked a Cubs batter, a homerun followed. The Cubs piled on even more in the eighth, with Wright following up a walk to Adduci with a two run homerun, giving the Cubs an 11-4 edge. Another interesting note is former coach Leo Perez, who was added to the active roster just a few days ago, got his first at-bat this season, striking out in a pinch hit at bat for Clevenger.

The Cubs will go on the road to face the Brevard Country Manatees Sunday beginning at 1:00pm. Catch the broadcast on 1380 WELE at 12:45pm or right here on For ticket information call 386-257-3172 or visit
