Cubs Bats Silenced by Blue Jays
Cubs Record Three Hits in Loss
DAYTONA BEACH – The Daytona Cubs (6-7) could not hold off the Dunedin Blue Jays (8-3) on Tuesday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Jays used a three run third inning to propel them to a 5-1 victory. The Cubs struck first in the opening frame off of Jays starter Chuck Huggins. Center fielder Tony Campana led off the inning with a walk. He moved up to second on a ground ball and stole third base. Fellow outfielder Brandon Guyer came through with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Daytona the early 1-0 lead. The rains came in the top of the third inning and delayed the ball game 45 minutes. After the delay, Cubs starter Chris Carpenter got back to work, but was not the same pitcher he was before the delay. He allowed a single to second baseman John Tolisano and then an error by Cubs third baseman Josh Vitters put runners at second and third. Following a walk by Manny Rodriguez, third baseman Jesus Gonzalez singled up the middle to bring in two and one more came in after the ball got past Tony Campana. Dunedin made it a 5-1 ball game with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Center fielder Bradley McElroy tripled with two outs to start the rally. Tolisano followed with a walk and both of them came around to score on a double down the line by Moises Sierra. The Blue Jays outfielder now has a nine-game hitting streak and leads the Florida State League in batting average. Daytona will now hit the road for a three game set with Tampa at George Steinbrenner Field beginning Wednesday night.
